This permitted it to be a means for moving and moderating the passions, because it could imitate the rhythms and inflections of impassioned or ordinary speech and seek the regions of the voice used in various states of emotion. For this purpose the Greeks developed a system of keys through which they could raise or lower any melody to fit a particular region of the voice. Aside from instrumental music, which with or without dance could be imitative of actions, melody was a vehicle for the expression of the content of poetry.
