That sense first appeared clearly in his “Justice as Fairness: Political Not Metaphysical,” Philosophy and Public Affairs 14 (1985): 223–51. L. A. Selby-Bigge (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1967), book 2, part 2, sec. 2, and in An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, ed. J. B. Schneewind (Indianapolis: Hackett, 1983), part 1, sec. 3. See also Rawls, Theory, pp. 126–30. 24 Isaiah Berlin has long emphasized the possibility of a plurality of social worlds of roughly equivalent value and the danger of imagining that only one ideal type of social world is possible.
